Arm Lift

As we age or lose a significant amount of weight, we may not always feel satisfied with what we see in the mirror. If you raise your arm, you may notice loose skin hanging downward, which can cause embarrassment, especially when wearing short-sleeved clothing.
Exercise may help maintain muscle tone, but loose skin and stubborn fat may remain and cannot always be corrected through diet and exercise alone. Arm lift surgery can improve the shape and appearance of the arms, helping patients restore a more balanced and youthful-looking contour.
Dr. Ahmed El Sayed, Consultant Plastic Surgeon and holder of a PhD in Plastic Surgery from Kasr Al Ainy Faculty of Medicine, has extensive experience and a strong record in his field, helping patients achieve the best possible results. Through his experience, he provides comprehensive care for patients dealing with the effects of major weight loss, including excess skin in areas such as the upper arms.

What Is Arm Lift Surgery?

Arm lift surgery is a form of cosmetic surgery specifically designed to treat sagging skin and excess fatty tissue in the upper arms. The goal of this procedure is not only to remove excess skin and fat, but also to improve the overall shape and contour of the arms.
This surgical procedure aims to reduce the appearance of sagging or drooping that may occur after significant weight loss or as part of the natural ageing process, which often leads to reduced skin elasticity.
During arm lift surgery, either a longitudinal or transverse incision is made in the arm, depending on the location of the sagging. If the excess skin extends along the length of the arm, a longitudinal incision is performed. If the loose skin is concentrated only in the upper area, a transverse incision under the armpit may be sufficient.
Through this incision, the surgeon can remove excess skin and perform liposuction to remove any excess fat. The remaining skin is then tightened and sutured back into place, resulting in a firmer, slimmer, and more youthful-looking upper arm.

Arm Lift Before and After Results

Arm lift surgery can result in firmer and more youthful-looking upper arms, giving patients more confidence to wear sleeveless clothing freely.
The satisfying results achieved through arm lift surgery are usually long-lasting and can maintain their aesthetic appeal for a long time.
The surgical scars caused by this procedure are usually not visible unless the arms are raised, and these scars gradually fade over time.

Benefits of Upper Arm Lift Surgery

Removing sagging skin: The main goal of arm lift surgery is to treat sagging skin. By removing this excess and loose skin, the procedure effectively addresses the problem and helps create smoother and more youthful-looking arms.
Improving arm firmness: One of the most important benefits of arm lift surgery is noticeably improving the firmness of the upper arms. The procedure removes excess skin and fat, allowing the remaining skin to be tightened, which results in a more toned and balanced appearance.
Less noticeable scars: Although any surgical procedure will inevitably leave some scarring, upper arm lift surgery is designed so that the scars are usually placed on the inner side of the arms, making them less visible.
Improving arm contour: Arm lift surgery significantly improves the shape of the arms by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the remaining skin. This creates a more proportionate appearance and helps improve self-confidence and comfort when wearing clothing that reveals the arms, such as short-sleeved tops or swimwear.

Ideal Candidates for Arm Lift Surgery

When considering arm lift surgery, it is important to understand whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. This is usually assessed during a consultation with Dr. Ahmed El Sayed, where patients can discuss their concerns and expectations with this qualified surgeon.
The ideal candidate for arm lift surgery should meet the following criteria:
Good general health: The candidate should be in good physical health, which is essential for a smooth surgical procedure and successful recovery.
Non-smoking: The candidate should be a non-smoker or be willing to stop smoking for at least six weeks before and after the procedure to reduce possible complications and support optimal healing.
Personal motivation: The candidate should seek surgery out of personal conviction, not because of social pressure. The decision to undergo this procedure should come from personal motivation rather than being influenced by the opinions or expectations of others.

Preparing for Arm Lift Surgery

The initial consultation is a comprehensive session that includes a physical examination and a full review of your medical history. You will be encouraged to describe your expectations and the aesthetic appearance you hope to achieve.
During the consultation, Dr. Ahmed El Sayed will assess your individual condition to determine the most suitable procedure or combination of procedures to help you achieve your goals.
For arm lift surgery, specific aspects will be discussed, such as the location of the incision, whether a longitudinal incision along the arm or a smaller transverse incision under the armpit is more suitable, and the expected success of each option. This allows the patient to understand their needs in light of the surgical opinion regarding their condition.
Preoperative instructions will also be explained, including:
Vitamins and medications: Always follow Dr. Ahmed El Sayed’s specific instructions regarding certain vitamins or medications that may help support your immune system and speed up the healing process after surgery.
Stopping smoking: Smoking significantly weakens blood circulation and disrupts healing, which may lead to complications during and after the procedure.
Avoiding certain medications and supplements: Avoid taking certain medications, including aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs, for two weeks before and after surgery, as these medications increase the risk of bleeding during the procedure. Similarly, it may also be necessary to avoid certain herbal supplements because they may interfere with anesthesia or cause excessive bleeding.
During the comprehensive consultation at Dr. Ahmed El Sayed’s clinics, Consultant Plastic Surgeon and holder of a PhD in Plastic Surgery from Kasr Al Ainy Faculty of Medicine, you will have the opportunity to view several before-and-after photos of arm lift procedures he has previously performed. This will provide you with a realistic understanding of the results you may expect.

Arm Lift Surgery

Step 1: For a full arm lift, an incision is made from the elbow to the armpit. The degree of correction for sagging skin and the size of the arms depend on the shape and length of the incision.
Step 2: The surgeon gently removes any excess fat with minimal bleeding to adjust the size of the arm.
Step 3: The accumulated excess skin is surgically removed, and the wound edges are carefully approximated using temporary surgical clips.
Step 4: Dissolvable sutures are placed along the skin edges to help achieve a cosmetically acceptable scar.
Step 5: Specialized compression garments are placed on the arms to support the incisions and reduce swelling after surgery.

Recovery After Arm Lift Surgery

The recovery period after arm lift surgery is important and can significantly affect the final results of the procedure. During this time, it is normal to experience some discomfort and swelling, which usually improves by the end of the second week of recovery. The overall recovery period generally lasts from four to six weeks.
After arm lift surgery, a scar will remain along the lower arm and gradually fade. If you do not wish to have a long scar, you may consider an arm lift with a transverse incision under the armpit, where the scar is limited to the armpit area and is therefore less noticeable.
To help the healing process, you will be asked to avoid smoking. You will also need to avoid blood-thinning medications.
You are advised to wear the compression garment placed by Dr. Ahmed El Sayed at the end of the arm lift procedure continuously for the first three weeks. This period may be longer if the surgeon recommends wearing the garment for a longer time. It should be removed before showering and worn again immediately afterward.
Strenuous physical activity should be avoided during the first two weeks. Light physical activity may be allowed after four weeks following arm lift surgery.
